The Outcomes integration with Canvas leverages data from the Outcomes feature of Canvas. This ensures that data pulled into Campus Labs for the purposes of demonstrating institutional learning performance includes results that are the result of intentional assessment efforts by faculty members.

We have documented your options for setting up the integration here if you have limited experience with the feature.

1.) Document outcome statements at the course level

There are several ways to accomplish this in Canvas. Each of these options has pros and cons depending on your institutional assessment culture, resourcing, and expectations of faculty.

A) Blueprint

Canvas' Blueprint feature allows LMS administrators to set up course shells with pre-determined data, including outcomes, rubrics, and assignments. This would allow LMS administrators to set up course design templates with built-in components that are synced across any number of courses or instructors. Course shells can be set up with outcomes, rubrics, and assignments already created. Here is an overview video of that feature from Canvas: https://community.canvaslms.com/videos/3073-blueprint-tool-overview.

B) Account Outcomes

Outcomes can be set up by account and group by a Canvas administrator. This would create searchable folders of pre-set outcomes that faculty members could search to include on their courses for assessment. Outcomes can be manually created or imported. Here is an overview of that feature from Canvas: https://vimeo.com/73489063.

C) Instructor-Created Outcomes

In this implementation, individual instructors can create outcomes for their courses to be used for assessment within Canvas. Here is a help document for that feature from Canvas: https://community.canvaslms.com/docs/DOC-26317-how-do-i-create-an-outcome-for-a-course.

When setting up outcomes in Canvas, be sure to enable points in order for the integration to work.

2.) Associate outcomes with rubrics or question banks

Here is a Canvas article outlining how to align an outcome with an instrument for assesssment: https://community.canvaslms.com/docs/DOC-17336-897271119816#rubrics

3.) Collect Data

The Outcomes feature of Canvas allows faculty members to assess students on learning outcomes and grade at the same time. By associating outcomes with rubrics and question banks for tests and quizzes, scores are generated for SLO assessment. The scores may or not be used for grading.

No matter how outcomes are created (via Blueprint, at the account level and added to courses, or via manual creation by faculty) any data collected on an outcome in Canvas will be available for aggregation in Campus Labs Outcomes via the integration.
