General education programs have come a long way in the past 10 years. Many might remember general education—also often referred to as “core” or “liberal arts” programs—as a smattering of course offerings across key themes or areas. On many of today’s college campuses, general education has become a deeply integrated program—one that is embedded in the work of the disciplines and aligned with the character and aspirations of the institution. These changes have called for new and dynamic approaches to assessment as well. In this webinar, we’ll review this historical shift in the program as a whole, examine different models of assessment within the area, and identify some of the key components of a robust general education assessment plan. Throughout the session, we’ll provide examples from both two- and four-year institutions doing innovative work in the area.
